Back around about 2001, I got introduced to Counter-Strike via a friend. I was hooked instantly. I'd been an avid Half Life player and to be able to use the engine to play online FPS gaming was a dream come true. I'd never played anything like it.
I enjoyed many fun times, frustrations, and experiences with that game, but ultimately, Valve and all of their minions won the battle to make things so complex that those of us who had been in it a long time could no longer do so. With the advent of the horrendous STEAM platform, I tried valiantly but could no longer play CS, or any of the other mods I'd come to love (Day of Defeat, FireArms). So my online FPS days stagnated. That is until this year.
Nexon Corp. released Combat Arms...a CS-like FPS clone that's free to download and sign up for. It's just as fun, and I say more challenging. I don't know how many of you are into FPS gaming, but this is a helluva fun game. Basically, you sign up with a nexon.net ID and password, then download CA, and can sign in with your ID/pass. Then, the system works thusly:
1. You sign in, customize your guy, etc.
2. You play on servers in various game modes (I prefer just straight deathmatch/elimination)
3. You gain experience points and money. The experience points get you to a higher rank, and each time you level up you get a money bonus. The money buys guns, gear, and armor, all of which are purchased for a duration of time, not indefinitely. This keeps you hungry for more money, which is ingenious. (e.g. "I just bought a 7-day M16" meaning I bought an M16 which I can use as much as I want for 7 days before it expires).
I dunno, I'm having a lot of fun with it, and if any of you want in on it, go right ahead. I also have a clan started in which only my brother and I are members, but I could slot anyone in who wishes to be in, and then we could make sure to play against or with one another when we're online.
