Warhawk is mediocre and barely enjoyable. Movement is rigid, aiming feels slippery, and vehicles handle like you're driving it with your ass. At least Halo 3's nice graphics make its mediocrity sting less. Warhawk looks like a PS2 game. If they sacrificed graphics to allow big, fun team battles, they failed. Unreal Tournament 3 felt incomplete. Warhawk feels as incomplete as UT3 but without the pretty visuals and colors. I don't know what's more infuriating: Warhawk's aiming system or how Lost Planet chose to handle its evasive roll.
Most enjoyable to least enjoyable:
1. Call of Duty 4
2. Battlefield: Bad Company
3. Team Fortress 2
4. Call of Duty 3
5. Call of Duty 2
6. Gears of War
7. Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
8. Halo 3
9. Rainbow Six: Vegas
10. Unreal Tournament 3, Frontlines: Fuel of War
11. Warhawk, Lost Planet
12. Quake Wars
I played the Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway demo. It felt somewhat fun, but man, did Ubisoft poorly-choose its release date.
Just for the sake of review, here's a list of upcoming shooter titles for the 2008 Pantsplosion and early-2009:
Dead Space (October 14, 2008)
Sounds like: BioShock but more appealing to my tastes and without the excessive praise.
SOCOM: Confrontation (October 14, 2008)
Sounds like: I should hope Slant Six Games fixed issues found in the beta.
Far Cry 2 (October 21, 2008)
Sounds like: the first good sandbox shooter. I want to try its map editor and see how its open-ended story mode functions.
Legendary (October 21, 2008)
Sounds like: a mediocre game. Note, the original Call of Duty developers, Spark Unlimited, also made Turning Point: Fall of Liberty.
Fallout 3 (October 28, 2008)
Sounds like: morphine... err, "Med-X"... in video game format.
Quantum of Solace (October 31, 2008)
Sounds like: your mother's a whore, Trebek! Quantum of Solace (QoS) sounds like a worthy successor to GoldenEye. And really, with the Call of Duty 4 engine, would you expect less? I just hope they include proximity mines...
Resistance 2 (November 4, 2008)
Sounds like: the Cloverfield monster's becoming sushi on November 4th.
Gears of War 2 (November 7, 2008)
Sounds like: Dustin Berg ejaculating all over his hand-sewn, life-size Cliffy B. "action" doll.
Mirror's Edge (November 11, 2008)
Sounds like: parkour deaths become a fad this holiday season.
Call of Duty: World at War (November 11, 2008)
Sounds like: Treyarch finally getting something resembling praise.
Left 4 Dead (November 19, 2008)
Sounds like: pee splashing in my pants as smart zombies seek my brain.
Damnation (December 2008)
Sounds like: a steampunk UE3 shooter with elements of Tomb Raider.
FEAR 2 (February 10, 2009)
Sounds like: a good title to pick up at a 30 dollar price point.
Killzone 2 (February 2009)
Sounds like: love.
Red Faction: Guerrilla (Q1 2009)
Sounds like: Volition, Inc. may want to not pull a Hell's Highway and schedule a release around Killzone 2's release date. The beta played like Lost Planet but with destructible environments and lots of red instead of white.
Rogue Warrior: Black Razor (Q1 2009)
Sounds like: WildTangent installs into a console near you come 2009.
Velvet Assassin (Q1 2009)
Sounds like: Splinter Cell with a female lead.
Most enjoyable to least enjoyable:
