I'm honestly really looking forward to it. I haven't been caught up in release hype for a Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles.

I don't know. I've been a Sonic fan since 1993 when I first saw the ABC cartoon, I remember when Sonic 2 came out which is still my favorite in the series, some of my fondest memories ever are of me and my elementary school friends playing Sonic CD, I read the Archie comics, I ate Sonic pasta, I had all the shitty spinoff games, I remember the hype of Sonic 3/Knuckles which will go down as one of my favorite times in gaming EVER.
I was there for Sonic Adventure and the Dreamcast, which was also an awesome time. However, that was Sonic's last hurrah and his good name has been plagued by garbage shovelware ever since. Sega can't get me to buy on nostalgia alone. This is going to have to be a good game, and I don't think Sonic Team is capable of delivering that anymore.
But let's be honest here. This is supposed to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Okay that's great. But from what little we've seen so far, it looks like a cheap imitation. New SMB-ish 3D graphics? Ha. Sonic Adventure character designs? Unless something happened between Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure to explain why Sonic looks like a cat with the mange, then I can't get behind this. This could have been Sega's chance to pull our hedgehog out of purgatory. If they fuck this up, they are done.

Hopefully this game is up there with the Genesis trilogy. They had the right blend of speed and platforming that's absent from the recent portable side-scrollers (though I still think they're fun). Sonic 2 is still my favorite in the series, too. I also loved 3 & Knuckles, but it just didn't captivate me the way S2 did. And I have to say, although the designs and promotional art look off on some games (looking at you Sonic 06), I prefer the modern character designs. I mean the classics are classics, but Sonic looked sooo un-athletic . Now he looks like he actually spends everyday running, although he could do with a quill trimming.

And I hope we get AT LEAST six zones for episode 1.

I liked the modern designs when I first saw them in EGM's SA preview back in '98, but when all's said and done I associate them with shitty games and a horrible anime series. Personally I think it's time for another reboot, change his design again or go back to the basics. I think something in between would be cool. But they'll never go back to the classic designs because a) Sega hates Oshima and b) they would have to "classic-ize" Sonic's entire cast of shitty friends when they, inevitably, shoehorn them into Sonics 5 6 and 7.

Well, Sonic Team isn't developing it after all. That's something this game definitely has going for it now.

The closer it gets, and the more I see of it, the more excited I am. I have no other choice, it's SONIC FUCKING FOUR. The title of this game is awful ambitious. If it's a bad game, WE ARE DONE, SEGA. Last chance sweetheart.

I'm just gonna say it now. Reel in your expectations a little bit. I've played it. It's fine. Not great. And it's multiple parts at 15 bucks a pop, which is asking an awful lot.

The Genesis games weren't that great to begin with. If it offers half the fun Sonic 1 did, I'll be happy.

I hope Sonic Colors is on your radar, because that game from the three levels I played was great. I loved it.

Absolutely. Everything I've seen so far looks awesome. I will probably rent before I buy though.

Episode 1 is only going to have four zones, right? That's the only thing that really disappoints me so far. That and Tails and Knuckles really should be playable from the get-go. This should be a sequel to Sonic 3, not a re-imagining of Sonic 1. In this regard, Sonic Advance is a better Sonic 4 than the actual Sonic 4. I'll reserve my final judgment for when the other episodes are available.

If Sonic 4 is actually good, I wouldn't mind paying 15 bucks a chapter. I think I paid 55 bucks for Sonic & Knuckles when it first came out, and technically that was half a game.

I would pay $60 for the entire thing at retail, I think most other people would too.

Does anyone have the Sonic compilation for the DS? Portable Sonic 3 & Knuckles is awesome.

Yeah, I got it. Took me a few days to actually find a copy in any store. I enjoy it to a point, but there are times when the ports are a MESS.
IGN reviewed Sonic 4. They really enjoyed it. Although he did praise the music, which I think is the worst part. It's like they tried to RECREATE Sonic tunes, but lacked the musical ability to make something harmonizing and interesting.

The ports aren't perfect, but 15 years ago I would have killed for even a half-assed Game Gear version of Sonic 3.
JJ, I'm assuming you've played Sonic Advance 1 right? How does Sonic 4 measure up?

I liked it about as much as Advance but not as much something like Rush. Although I have a surreal LOVE for the original Sonic Rush.

Okay well there you go. DO NOT get me started on Rush. I adore it but it does not hold a candle to the Genesis games.

I liked it in SPITE of having the words Sonic there. I'm pretty sure if they just made it a "Blaze The Cat" game and left Sonic out entirely, I would have love it just as much. I just kind of like the reckless abandon gameplay. Rush Adventure was fucking awful.
Dimps should be the only people left in control of Sonic games. CLEARLY they are the only ones knowing what the hell is going on.

It was pretty much 2D Sonic Adventure. I loved the level design, the music, and the boss battles, and Blaze (I think) is the best new character since Knuckles. And Eggman Nega is fucking rad to the max. Dimps is usually hit or miss though. Sonic Advance 2 and 3 were awful.

I can't decide which version to buy. WiiWare comes out tomorrow, but I may wait for the XBLA version...

I'm getting the XBLA version, just because of it's appearance. They're the same game, might as well get the prettier version. If you buy multiple versions of the game, Sega will make a video and give you a shoutout.
