The tenth anniversary of the Dreamcast is bringing back some bad memories for me. I think back to 1999/2000, and all these rumors started coming out about the "Dolphin." So much potential. Here we were, coming off the heels of Nintendo's worst generation, but it finally looked like everything's coming up Nintendo! Next generation graphics. Disc media. Third-party support. Yep, Nintendo was finally getting their shit together.
But look at what we ended up with. A purple fucking cube with a handle and Luigi's Faggot Mansion. Craig McCracken Presents: The Legend of Zelda. Clean is better than dirty and dirty's meaner than clean! And look where we are now with the Wii, Nintendo's answer to the Sega Pico.
If you'll excuse me, I'll go lock myself in my room and pretend it's 1992.

The Gamecube has a surprising amount of genuinely GREAT titles that were exclusive to it, either at first for just in general. It's kind of funny that companies, even through to the bitter end, kept throwing high dollar development teams in it's direction. It's still shocking that Nintendo has probably the best Resident Evil games have been Nintendo Exclusives, and even when 4 went to PS2, the 'Cube and Wii versions were far superior.
And Mario Sunshine is a surprisingly great game, it's just not the only Mario game we should have gotten. It should have been a We got Mario AND this Mario Sunshine a few years later. I spent TONS of hours playing that damn game in single sittings.

I will not deny what little greatness the GameCube had, and maybe it was naive of me to expect more, but the SNES spoiled me. Nintendo had unparalleled greatness in the late 80s and early 90s. Is it really wrong to have expected them to return to that?
Fact: if Super Mario Sunshine, same game but different characters, had been released as... Super Bubsy Sunshine, well... it would have been the best damn Bubsy game yet.

Sunshine would probably have been considered one of the Gamecubes best games if it were just an original IP. Could you imagine that? First US appearance of Animal Forrest, the return of Metroid, and two all new high profile original IPs? Nintendo maybe wouldn't have been on top of the world, but the memories would have been fonder.
