Seriously think about it. Could you imagine growing up on these systems. Most kids today wouldn't even touch an SNES game because of the graphics. I'm happy that I know what it's like to be winded by the time you get an NES game to work.

Yup, not to sound snobbish, but I think the fact that I grew up with an Atari, and an NES, I learned to appreciate substance over style.
Today, you have kids that like "a lot of graphics."

Likewise. Most people just care how a game looks. Hell, i still like to play Combat.

Yeah, as far as we, aside from Ross :-p , are concerned, we've never known life without videogames. But seriously, most of us here have been able to watch the drastic evolution of games.

It's a shame, really. These kids are growing up with very little substance in everything in life, not just video games. That's not to say all modern games lack substance and creativity, but uhh...well, look at the sales charts.
I think every serious gamer owes it to themselves to learn about the history. What gets under my skin is when someone simply WON'T play a game because it's before their time or from a different era. What kind of shitty attitude is that to have? Will you refuse to listen to music that came out before you were born, or not watch movies because they're in black and white or don't have enough SPECIAL FX? I know not everyone is into older games...I'm fine with that, but there's a certain level of disrespect they tend to have that drives me insane. Like, the games aren't worth playing because they're not 3D or because they don't look good.
Obviously a pet peeve of mine...

Not to double post, but I was fortunate enough to have two older cousins who were diehards, and showed me all these great games that were out in the present and in the past. I had to have been only 6 or 7 at that time. I learned so much about gaming history and the inner-workings of a game that it made me appreciate it a little more. I didn't even pay attention to gaming news at that time, so when they got a PS1 for Christmas, I was confused. I still remember that day. "Play...Station? What does it do?" I thought it was like some elaborate gaming station, lmao.

Damn right, I still have all my old systems and I will bust out Sunset Riders occasionally just to play a game that I enjoy almost more then 75% of my playstation games.
*goes back to playing Commander Keen*

What's funny is when there's screenshots of games now, and someone says they look like trash, and I would've loved to have had fully rendered enviroments back in the NES days.

I was fortunate to have the video game upbringing I did; while 3D renderings were just coming into existence when I began, I basically started from scratch. Ancient arcade games, moved up to Sega/NES, then PC for a long while before integrating that with the N64 and then eventually the PS2.
I can't believe kids today. If something doesn't look like Halo 3 they go ape shit and crap all over it. Motherfucker, if I would have seen anything like Goldeneye when I was playing Super Street Fighter in a dank basement I would have creamed my jeans.
